Triple Threat (2019) – A Martial Arts Fan’s Dream, Critics Be Damned

All right, let’s fucking talk about this one. Triple Threat (2019). This isn’t just another cookie-cutter action flick, this is a martial arts banger stacked with legends. If you love movies where real fighters, real stuntmen, and legit martial artists throw down with no bullshit, then this is your movie.

Now, I’ll say this right up front—IMDB gave it a 5.6, Rotten Tomatoes sat at 67, and those motherfuckers can go kick rocks. That’s critics being critics, sipping their wine, adjusting their glasses, and acting like they know what real action is. This movie? It’s a love letter to martial arts fans. And that’s exactly what I’m about.

The Essence of Martial Arts Movies

Here’s the thing—when you grow up watching Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and even Van Damme, you understand that martial arts movies are about the fight choreography. It’s not about Oscar-worthy acting or a script that’s gonna change your worldview. No. It’s about two people stepping into a scene and delivering fights that make you sit up in your seat and yell, “Holy shit!”

That’s why Triple Threat hits home for me. Because every single fighter in this movie puts in the work. These aren’t body doubles doing a quick two-punch combo and cutting the camera away. These are real martial artists who live this shit.

The Star-Studded Cast

This cast is no joke.

  • Tony Jaa – The man who put Ong-Bak on the map. If you’ve seen his early movies, you know exactly why I’m hyped. His athleticism, the elbows, the knees, the stunts—pure insanity. He should’ve been a bigger star in the U.S., but Hollywood never gave him the right push. Doesn’t matter. To martial arts fans, he’s a legend.
  • Iko Uwais – Straight outta The Raid. If you’ve seen that movie, you already know. He brings that raw Indonesian silat style. His fights aren’t just flashy—they’re gritty, they’re dirty, and they feel real. He’s not pretending to hit, he’s throwing.
  • Michael Jai White – This dude is always money. He’s got presence, skill, and when he steps on screen, you know he’s about to wreck shop. Whether he’s playing hero or villain, he’s a badass every time.
  • Scott Adkins – Look, Scott Adkins might be the most underappreciated action star of the last twenty years. The man is built for this genre. He can play the anti-hero, he can play the villain, and when he fights, it looks clean as hell. He’s one of those guys who got typecast as the bad guy, but honestly, he plays it so well you don’t even mind.
  • Michael Bisping – Yeah, that Michael Bisping. UFC champ. Now, most fighters can’t transition into acting worth a damn, but Bisping? He’s got charisma, he’s got presence, and he fits in just fine with this cast.

And that’s just the tip of it. You’ve got Tiger Hu Chen, Jeeja Yanin, and even Dominic Vandenberg and Ron Smoorenburg. It’s a who’s who of international martial arts talent.

The Plot (Without Spoilers)

Here’s the deal: a criminal syndicate puts a hit out on a billionaire’s daughter. Boom, simple as that. Elite assassins are gunning for her, and a ragtag crew of mercenaries have to protect her.

Look, you’re not watching this movie for the plot. It’s functional—it gives us the reason to get all these badasses in one place and let them throw down. That’s all it needs to do. And it does that just fine.

Why the Fight Scenes Work

The fight scenes in Triple Threat feel alive. And that’s because the cast is full of legit martial artists. There’s no shaky cam bullshit, no quick cuts to hide stunt doubles. You see fists fly, kicks land, and bodies hit the floor.

Tony Jaa brings that knee-and-elbow fury. Iko Uwais brings the gritty silat. Scott Adkins? He’s the perfect villain, making you want to see him get his ass handed to him. Michael Jai White? He’s got that heavyweight swagger, and every hit he throws looks like it could break bones.

That’s the magic here. You’ve got different fighting styles colliding. It’s not one-note. It’s dynamic.

Why Critics Don’t Get It

Critics don’t get martial arts movies. They’ll sit there and whine about character arcs or pacing while ignoring the fact that the choreography is some of the best in years. They want everything to be polished and artsy, but martial arts movies are about sweat, grit, and impact.

So when IMDB says 5.6, I laugh. When Rotten Tomatoes says 67, I laugh harder. Action fans know better. And guess what? Google users had it at 72%. That’s real fans speaking.

Where to Watch It

One of the best things about Triple Threat is how easy it is to find. Amazon Prime, Peacock, Tubi, Pluto, Plex, Roku—you can stream it damn near anywhere. And if you’ve got a subscription, it’s probably free.

So no excuses. If you haven’t seen it yet, go fire it up.

Why It’s a Must-Watch

Here’s why I recommend Triple Threat—because it delivers what martial arts fans want. It’s not trying to be something it’s not. It’s not pretending to be a drama, it’s not going to win Oscars, and it’s not going to be studied in film schools.

But you’re gonna see some of the best martial artists in the world go toe-to-toe. You’re gonna see stunts that make you wince. You’re gonna see fight scenes that feel raw and real. And that’s what matters.

Final Thoughts

Triple Threat is a movie I’ll throw on any time. Sometimes I watch it start to finish, sometimes I’ve got it on in the background, and either way, I’m entertained. It’s action done right.

If you grew up on Van Damme, Seagal, or Jackie Chan—this movie’s for you. If you love Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, or Scott Adkins—this movie’s for you. Hell, if you just want to see people beat the absolute shit out of each other for 90 minutes—this movie’s for you.

So yeah, this is a must-watch in my book.

And if you’ve got a martial arts movie you think tops it, drop it in the comments. I’m always down to check out new fights.
